SCI Web Portals: Connecting people, uniting communities
One of the most tangible tools SCI can offer your community is an interactive community Web Portal and related online engagement strategies, including social media and blogging. The website, which is developed by SCI and a local steering committee with specific community needs and requests in mind, serves two main functions. First, it is designed to serve as the primary source for information on events, meetings, and groups in the community. Key features include a searchable guide of community resources, a community calendar and news about community events, volunteer opportunities and other happenings. While an administrator maintains the site and updates it with relevant information, the site also offers community members the ability to post their own events to a calendar, promoting a sense of community ownership and investment in the website. Second, the site also allows easy registration for a weekly eBlast highlighting key happenings with links to the community portal for more information.
Once the initial site development is complete, which typically takes about six months, SCI continues to provide training and support for the local SCI community portals, including management of administrative functions like hosting, software updates and backups. Content is updated frequently by the participating local organizations.
