Boston Cares New Volunteer Orientation

Boston Cares is a flexible volunteer agency that connects individuals with volunteer opportunities throughout the Greater Boston area. Boston Cares post up to 200 volunteer opportunities each month! To volunteer for events through Boston Cares, new members must go through the New Volunteer Orientation.

Volunteer at Center for Families' Family Fun Day

The Center for Families is a family support program that serves families of children ages 0 to 8 in Cambridge. Twice a year the Center for Families hosts Family Fun Days. These are family friendly events that draw anywhere from 200-500 families. The winter Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, January 25th at the Peabody School, located at 70 Rindge Ave in Cambridge. The event includes an abundance of activities including arts and crafts, face painting, an obstacle course, moon bounce, infant area, book giveaway, basketball, and much more. All families in Cambridge with children ages 0-8 are encouraged to attend!

Help Tutor at Prospect Hill Academy

Join Prospect Hill Academy for after school tutoring. Their program runs on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:15 until 5:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for students to receive additional academic support and individualized attention. Prospect Hill Academy is seeking volunteers who can work with students in grades 7 through 12 in Math, Science, Spanish, English, and Social Studies. If you would still like to volunteer, but do not feel comfortable tutoring in these subject, you can help out. You can volunteer to be a supportive "study buddy" helping with organizational strategies and homework help.

Prospect Hill Academy's Upper School Campus is located in the Central Square neighborhood of Cambridge. Their mission is to prepare every student for success in college, inspire a lifelong love of learning, and foster responsible citizenship.

Help Give Parents the Chance to Learn How to Use a Computer

Tech Goes Home classes teach parents about resources that can improve the lives of themselves and their family members. However it is hard for them to concentrate on a computer screen when they have their younger children wanting their attention. 

Come provide child care while their parents learn how to use the Internet! You are able to play with young children, while the parents can work on their computer skills and can concentrate knowing their children are in safe hands! Volunteers would be needed from Tuesday January 14th until Wednesday January 22nd

Volunteer Tax Preparers Needed

The Neighborhood Developers (TND) provides free tax preparation as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for low-to-moderate income clients. Through hard work and dedication, their team of volunteers served over 1,000 households in 2013, and their client's refund totaled over $1.6 million! On average, the amount received through funds make up about 9% of their client's annual income. 

No experience is necessary, all training will be provided. TND is looking for individuals with a desire to help others and a willingness to learn something new. There are opportunities available at the Downtown Chelsea office, located at 4 Gerrish Ave and at the Revere Public Library, located at 179 Beach Street. Volunteer hours and days are flexible based on your interests and site operation hours. Volunteers would be needed for the tax season, late January until mid April.

Become a Fitness Mentor

Newton Mentoring Alliance Logo

The Newton Mentoring Alliance is looking for fitness mentors to empower youth to try new fitness activities and develop healthy habits. Each month the Newton Mentoring Alliance hosts activities for mentors and mentees focused on fitness such as hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, yoga, and much more.

Mentors are paired in a 1-on-1 relationship with a young person in grades 6-12, as part of a year long program. Mentors commit to meeting with their mentee in the community to participate in fitness activities twice a month for a total of six hours per month.

Training and ongoing support is provided. Monthly group activities and free/discounted events are offered for mentors and mentees.

  • Drivers License Required
  • Access to a Car
  • Must be at least 20 years old
  • 6 hours per month
  • Orientation and Training

A drivers license is required because of the suburban location in Newton, mentors must have car access.

Merrimack Valley Sandbox Health Innovator Mixer

The Merrimack Valley Sandbox is an organization that helps boost the economic and social well-being of Greater Lowell and Lawrence by advancing entrepreneurship and innovation. Their Entrepreneur Program gives entrepreneurs a greater chance at success through the Sandbox's workshops, pitch contests, and accelerator programs.

On Monday December 16, they will host a Health Innovator Mixer at Lawrence General Hospital located at 1 General Street in Lawrence from 6-8 pm.

They will have special guest speakers from Whole Foods Market, Spark Academy, and Lawrence General Hospital. They will also have a Health Innovator Showcase, where health innovator entrepreneurs will showcase their ideas! A full list of who will be at the showcase can be found here.

Egleston Holiday Celebration

The Egleston Coalition is hosting a Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting ceremony on Saturday December 7th from 2-4 pm. Some of the activities taking place include, holiday music, caroling, tree lighting, refreshments, a martial arts performance by Shim Gum Do, and much more. The local businesses will be recognized- some have even done festive window displays for the season.

Some of our AmeriCorps members will take the stage. One will wow the audience with a spoken words piece and another will sing some holiday songs. There will be a table for nonprofits, local businesses, and programs to place their materials on, bring your flyers of your organization's upcoming events!
