Programs

SCI operates four main program areas as summarized below. Each SCI community will develop projects within these categories based on community needs and opportunities; examples noted below are based on SCI’s existing Flagship and Network Communities. Engaging Youth: SCI’s youth civic engagement programming fosters new approaches for empowering youth to develop active citizenship and leadership skills. The Youth Council program, which provides leadership training to youth who mobilize their peers to get involved, is a major Engaging Youth program in SCI communities. SCI realizes a focus on youth is essential if we are to reverse the long-term decline in civic engagement. In particular, there is a need to encourage youth to participate in the political process.

Building Bridges: Through collaborations with other organizations, SCI brings community members from all backgrounds together. Programs include the Citizens Park Concert Series in Woburn, Neighborhood Day, an MLK Day Oral History Project, and regular SCI network meetings.

Developing Leaders: SCI teaches emerging leaders to effectively engage other citizens in community programs. SCI's Leadership Woburn program has been a primary focus of these activities to date. Through this program, emerging leaders receive leadership training and explore community issues.

Connecting Citizens: SCI uses information technology to connect people to information that they need to participate within the community. Our weekly eBlast newsletters provide residents with weekly community information including community events, trainings, and volunteer opportunities. Through the SCI Woburn Civic Welcome Wagon program, volunteers visit with new community residents in their neighborhood and deliver a “Welcome to Woburn” information package. This combines the use of information technology and “old fashioned” face-to-face contact to provide citizens with information they need to participate in civic life.
