AmeriCorps Week Addresses Bullying

SCI recently received a grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance to design AmeriCorps Week activities to highlight AmeriCorps service programs in Dorchester and Milford. The activities were organized around the theme "SCI AmeriCorps Family Week" aimed to address the bullying issue.

The week kicked off with My Dorchester Night on May 10th led by the team of 6 AmeriCorps members serving with DotWell. MyDorchester Night was a fantastic success, with 90 teens in attendance and 22 anti-bullying posters were created by the teens as part of anti-bullying workshops. Throughout the evening, youth and individuals took part in competitive basketball games, while learning about the resources offered by the MyDorchester.org website and AmeriCorps service. On Saturday, May 15th AmeriCorps volunteers assisted Milford Youth Center staff with painting and outside spring cleaning. They ended AmeriCorps Week by having Milford families come together to volunteer and help improve such an important place of refuge for youth in their community. The Milford Youth Center and The Juvenile Advocacy Group (JAG) engages AmeriCorps members throughout the year to provide critical services to their community. SCI Benefit at Merengue Restaurant

Stop by Merengue Restaurant after work on Tuesday, June 22nd from 6:00 - 8:00 PM to celebrate the first full day of summer with SCI! If the weather doesn't cooperate at least you'll feel like you've just stepped onto a sunny island with Merengue's gorgeous, colorful décor and delicious Dominican-style food. Merengue is also known as Red Sox player, Big Papi's (David Ortiz) favorite restaurant! Tickets are $25 per person and includes free appetizers along with a cash bar. There will be an auction taking place for a chance to win some fabulous prizes - so don't be late! All proceeds will benefit Social Capital Inc. 2010 SCI Social Capitalist Luncheon Recap

This year's Social Capitalist Luncheon, held on April 7th was a great success. We were pleased to have 330 people join us as we presented 2010 SCI Idealist Awards to Saskia & Paul Epstein and Susan Musinsky, and honored six wonderful Community Social Capitalists. SCI is actively recruiting our next year of AmeriCorps members. The 20 SCI AmeriCorps members will serve between September 2010 and June 2011, and will build social capital at various sites across our five communities in Woburn, Dorchester, Fall River, Milford and Lynn. Chelsea Food Drive & 5% Day

Come join us Saturday, June 5th (10AM - 5PM) at Compare Supermarket in Chelsea (157 Hawthorne St). SCI and Compare will be hosting a food drive to benefit local pantries. Please come out and buy food for donation. Whatever you give will be matched by Compare! Our previous efforts in Lynn have been a huge success, we hope to do the same in Chelsea. This is a great opportunity to give. Together, we can help those less fortunate. To further increase the impact of this collaboration, Compare will be donating 5% of sales to SCI to support its ongoing community building work. So you can help the local communities in two ways by heading to Compare on June 5!
