SCI's Holiday Activities

Decorated HouseHappy Holidays from SCI!  We are participating in several exciting events this holiday season.

On December 6th, we put on our 2009 Holiday House Tour, and it was a terrific success.  We had a great turnout overall. We had 141 tour-goers, and raised important funds critical to our organization’s mission. People touring the homes were able to connect with each other and the home owners, which follows SCI’s mission of connecting citizens to strengthen communities. Participants got to catch up with existing friends and neighbors, as well as, meet some new ones, while touring homes and getting ideas for creative holiday decorating.

Annabel Osburn, a SCI AmeriCorps member working with the North Suburban YMCA is helping to host a family event, Pizza with Santa, on December 19th. For more information, go to their website.  Contact Annabel Osburn at aosburn@socialcapitalinc.org for questions.

Several SCI AmeriCorps members serving at Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester recently completed a toy drive which provided 424 gifts to 189 families. Also, 70 gifts were donated to Mother's With Courage and 40 gifts were given to students at DFSI schools. Everyone involved really enjoyed themselves at the event, and the extra toys we have left are being donated to various other charities.

Another group of AmeriCorps members serving at the Dorchester House Multi-Service Center threw a Holiday Party which was  a big success. Santa and his Dorchester House Helpers gave away more than 700 gifts at the event on Saturday. Upwards of 55 volunteers helped out in various positions including event planning, gift wrapping, leading holiday crafts and activities at the event, and gift distribution.

The Milford Youth Center had their first Jingle Bell Jamboree on December 6th, which included arts & crafts, face painting, music, snacks & drinks, Toys for Tots, and pictures with Santa (all free)!

The MYC Youth Council will be volunteering at the Milford Daily Bread Food Pantry, Inc., on December 29th and 31st. Members from the Family Worship Center Council will be helping out on January 15th.

The MYC Youth Council along with the Milford Youth Center just received a UnitedHealth HEROES grant to put on a Nutrition Decathlon on Global Youth Service Day and to promote healthy choices and the importance of good nutrition!

The MYC Youth Council, in collaboration with the Milford Youth Center, JAG, Family Worship Center Council, and the Radar Minions will be putting on their second fashion show: "Dressed Up, Not Messed Up" on February 6th to
