Youth Civic Showcase and Awards 2009
”There are so many problems, its key that we’re all getting involved”
-Kelly Wright, JAG Milford Youth Council
Social Capital Inc. (SCI) held its 2nd annual Youth Civic Showcase and Awards this past Saturday at Bunker Hill Community College. The Youth Civic Showcase and Awards serves as the culmination of a year of service for each of SCI's Youth Councils. (SCI Dorchester Youth Council, SCI Lynn Citywide Youth Council, JAG Milford Youth Council and the SCI Woburn Youth Council) During the ceremony, each council highlighted their accomplishments and shared successful service and project planning techniques with other councils. Council members received feedback on their presentations and projects from an experienced panel of judges and guests including David Crowley, President and Founder of SCI, Karen Brooks, Community Relations Manager at Comcast, and Isadora Choute, Project Coordinator at the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation.
SCI is a statewide leader in developing programs that engage youth in civic explorations. As of 2009, SCI hosts mentoring programs in four Massachusetts communities, Dorchester, Lynn, Milford and Woburn. Our goal is to give youth an opportunity to play an active role in their communities. SCI's Youth Leadership program offers Youth Council members the opportunity to learn in a real world environment. The program teaches students skills needed to become leaders in their community. They learn these skills through both classroom activities and projects with a real audience and real consequences. Through the program youth learn to mobilize their peers to get involved in the community. SCI believes that engaged youth is an essential part of any strategy to reverse the long-term decline in civic engagement.
