Youth council member giving a presentation

One of our AmeriCorps members, Kevin McGravey, mentioned he'd been hearing several reports of former SCI Youth Council members who have attributed their success in college in part to the leadership experience they gained on the Youth Council. Sounds like this is an avenue we should think about for future impact evaluation. Meanwhile, this anecdote he relayed from a parent is compelling:

"My child was one of the first group of youth council members and just finished her second year of college. Her youth council experience gave her the skills she needed to succeed.Read more

SCI Youth Civic Showcase

On June 2, approximately 50 youth came together for the SCI Youth Civic Showcase. The youth represented youth councils from five different cities, Dorchester, Fall River, Lynn, Milford, and Woburn. The evening was a chance for the youth to interact with one another and to celebrate the year’s accomplishments.

The youth councils are led by the SCI AmeriCorps Youth Leadership Coordinators with the focus of engaging youth in the community. The groups meet regularly throughout the year to develop leadership skills as they plan and carry out service-learning projects.

The youth presentations during the Civic Showcase highlighted some of the projects and the impact the program has had on the youth. Here are a few of the accomplishments:

• The Dorchester Youth Council helped put together the first Dorchester College fair and the 8th Annual Safe Love Dance in which local youth received health information and resources while having a safe opportunity to interact with friends.Read more
