SCI Partners participate in MLK Day of Service events

While SCI headquarters was focused on making our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at Franklin Park a success (read more here), SCI AmeriCorps members at several of our partner organizations were concentrating their service on MLK Day events in their host communities. Multi-project, multi-organization events were held in Lynn and on the South Coast, while YLCs at the Boys & Girls Club of Woburn led their youth in activities and service projects to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday.

I stopped by Girls Inc. of Lynn on Monday afternoon to find a gymnasium bustling with service projects. Volunteers filled toolkits for homeless veterans and stuffed toiletry bags full of supplies for the Lynn Shelter Association. At another table, youth volunteers sewed homemade tote bags for the Lynn Shelter and Senior Center while, across the room, volunteers made valentines for seniors and veterans. Against a wall, immediately catching my eye, was a beautiful MLK mural (pictured), created and presented earlier by La Vida Scholars.Read more

SCI Youth Council Mini-Grants Making a Difference in Local Communities

Three of SCI's youth councils are currently in the process of distributing mini-grants for youth-led community service learning projects in local Massachusettes communities! This successful mini-grant program is funded this year by the OneWorld Boston, a Cummings Foundation affiliate.

SCI provides mini-grants of up to $750 to each youth council and they decide which community projects will be funded based on those who send in applications.

The youth councils are advised by SCI Youth Leadership Coordinators and they instill a community service learning based curriculum with their teen members. The mini-grant program is a great way for the teens on the youth council to learn about the grant-making process and how to affect real change in their communities.

It is also a great opportunity to engage other youth in the community and show them the impact they can make in their community as well as teach them valuable skills such as how to apply for a grant. Read more

A Story of How SCI Lynn is Connecting Residents

I received a phone call at work last week, a common occurrence. Without caller ID on my work phone, something we have learned to rely on thanks to cell phones, I am left to be surprised at every phone call. When I received that phone call, it was a pleasant surprise.

I serve as an AmeriCorps member with SCI Lynn, hosted at Girls Inc. of Lynn. One of my responsibilities is to manage the SCI Lynn website and send out a weekly email newsletter, called an “eBlast.” The woman calling me was a local Lynn resident who signed up for the eBlast this past summer at a Food and Fitness Fair. While at the fair she learned about The Food Project (TFP), a local nonprofit centered on food, community and youth. She wanted to know how her daughter could apply for their Summer Youth Program, an employment and job training opportunity for teens. She was unsure if I would know the answer but was confident I could point her in the right direction.Read more
