The Franklin Park Coalition in Dorchester will welcome CEP students for this volunteer event. During this particular service day we have planned to move a shed, and clear brush in the park. This should be a fun and exciting team building exercise and everyone is invited to join in.

College Bound Dorchester Seeking Tutors

College Bound Dorchester works to ensure that all students view success in college not just as a possibility in their lives but as a baseline expectation. They are looking for volunteers who are willing to work with ESOL students as part of their English Tea Time program. The program in on-going and always looking for committed volunteers. Walking Tour of Franklin Park

When: Wednesday, July 2 from 6 - 8 pm

Where: Begins at Shattuck Picnic Grove, Circuit Drive & Forest Hills Drive, Boston, MA 02121

 

On Wednesday, July 2nd a National Park Service ranger from Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site will be conducting a guided walk of Franklin Park entitled “Country in the City”. The event will be held rain or shine and is free and open to the public. No advance reservations are necessary. Participants will be be able to learn about Olmsted’s vision for Franklin Park as they visit the landscapes of Scarboro Pond, Schoolmaster Hill, the Country Park meadow, and a portion of the Wilderness, including the “99 Steps”. There will be a stop at the location within today’s park where writer and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson lived as a young man. For more information about the tour, please call 617-442-4141.

Field Day For Peace

Join the Boston Project Ministries for their Field Day For Peace Event taking place on Saturday, May 24 from 1-6 pm at Walsh Park in Dorchester (967 Washington Street). This stand up for peace event is to encourage youth to be active and promote peace within their Dorchester neighborhoods. Join the Talbot-Norfolk Triangle Youth Council (TNT Youth Council) for an afternoon of sports and activities including, basketball, flag football, dodgeball, and other active activities. There will be prizes for every sport, free food, and a chance to meet the TNT Youth Council who put this event together!

Boston Alliance for Community Health Speak Up! Event

Boston Alliance for Community Health (BACH) is partnering with 10 organizations to host a 2-day cross neighborhood conversation on community health in North Dorchester. Bowdoin Geneva, Fields Corner, Grove Hall, and Uphams Corner share many of the same community concerns around mental wellness, domestic violence, sexual health, and community violence. These neighborhoods have a wealth of resources, including great health centers, active community organizations, and diverse residents building the community's resiliency.The goal of BACH is to improve the coordination of systems that focuses on the key issues as a way to build community resilience and quality of life. 

The first day of the conversation will take place on Thursday, March 6th from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at Viet Aid located at 42 Charles Street in Dorchester. At this event attendees will be able to hear current health data presented by Boston Public Health Commission, followed by a resident panel and Q&A.Read more

SCI is currently accepting applications for our positions that begin in Sept. 2015!   These AmeriCorps positions are for our SCI AmeriCorps Volunteer Outreach Coordinator Positions and our SCI AmeriCorps Youth Leadership Coordinator Positions.  SCI is taking applications from organizations in various communities in Eastern Massachusetts that would like to partner with us to build social capital within your organization and community. SCI's focus communities include: Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury, Boston, Lynn, Woburn, and Fall River.

SCI AmeriCorps members aim to build social capital in their communities through civic engagement opportunities.

 

Volunteer Outreach Coordinators (VOC) will develop and implement practices for effective volunteer engagement at their host sites, drawing on SCI’s emphasis on relationship development and nurturing local social networks.

MLK Woodland Restoration Project in Franklin Park

On MLK Day, SCI will host a volunteer woodland restoration event in Franklin Park followed by a historic walk and reflection session on Martin Luther King Jr and service.  SCI is pleased to have received the funding for this opportunity through the Massachusetts Service Alliance's 2014 MLK Day Grant.

Through the collaboration of SCI’s host partner sites, the Franklin Park Coalition will join DotWell and the Millennium Ten Initiative to host a service day on January 20, 2014 to honor Martin Luther King Jr.  

Volunteer Focus: Removal of cat briar (a prickly vine that strangles trees) and trash removal from Franklin Park.  The project will begin with a brief introduction to the park, woodland restoration and Martin Luther King Jr.’s focus on community and the importance of service.  Read more
