#WalkWednesday In Chelsea

Our #WalkWednesday group will be starting up its weekly walks again! As of next Wednesday, September 21, we will meet for #WalkWednesday at 9 a.m. on the steps of the Chelsea Public Library. Please join us to explore the community and get healthy together! The #WalkWednesday group is a collaboration involving SCI, The Neighborhood Developers and The Healthy Chelsea Coalition.

Food Pairing event at Chelsea's Mystic Brewery on June 22

RaiseRaise a pint and raise some Social Capital on Monday, June 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Mystic Brewery, voted one of New England's top breweries by Boston Magazine. Here, in the Tasting Room, we will sample four of their own unique beers along with a pairing of food.  We will be having a live auction and guests will be able purchase other beer from Mystic Brewery's selection at the cash bar.

SCI Receives Vela Foundation Grant for $15,000

As highlighted in this piece by Bruce Coulter of the Woburn Advocate, SCI was recently awarded a Vela Foundation grant in the amount of $15,000 to aid our efforts to foster healthy communities, specifically in Chelsea, MA. In partnership with Healthy Chelsea, SCI plans to train 10 grassroots community leaders to develop and implement health promotion projects in Chelsea neighborhoods. This step will coincide with continued use and development of an SCI-designed interactive web portal linking Chelsea residents to health and community resources. As SCI Founder and President David Crowley mentions in the linked article, private foundation grants like these our essential to SCI's continued development of new programming.

Chelsea Community Connector (part-time)

SCI is partnering with the Healthy Chelsea Coalition to adapt the SCI web portal tool to help people in Chelsea to eat healthy foods and be physically active as a regular part of everyday life. SCI and the Healthy Chelsea Coalition seek an energetic candidate who will be the primary point-person to create content for Chelsea’s portal, and be recognized throughout the community as the specialist who serves as the “hub” of information about current community resources for healthy living. We are looking for someone who can converse in both Spanish and English. To learn more about the position, download the job description from the link below. Grant Awarded for Healthy Chelsea Portal

SCI will be developing a web portal to support goals of Healthy Chelsea.

SCI is pleased to announce that we have received a grant of $25,000 from the Cabot Family Charitable Trust to adapt our community web portal to support the goals of the Healthy Chelsea Coalition. We will be hiring a part-time Community Connector to play a key role implementing this grant.

Based in the Community Health Improvement Team of MGH’s Chelsea HealthCare Center, Healthy Chelsea was formed to address the need to promote community wellness, with a focus on improving the environmental and social conditions of Chelsea neighborhoods to make healthy eating and physical activity a daily reality for Chelsea residents. Ultimately, the Coalition aims to reduce obesity and prevent obesity-related diseases.Read more

Chelsea Chase 5K

Boys & Girls Club of America Logo

On Sunday, May 10th the Jordan Boys & Girls Club will host Chelsea Chase 5K. This event will take place at the Market Basket Plaza located at 170 Everett Avenue in Chelsea beginning at 10 AM. There will be a variety of volunteer roles, from helping at the registration table to encouraging participants throughout the race. All proceeds from this race will help benefit both the Jordan Boys & Girls Club and the Chelsea Police Relief Association.

Volunteer Tax Preparers Needed

The Neighborhood Developers (TND) provides free tax preparation as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for low-to-moderate income clients. Through hard work and dedication, their team of volunteers served over 1,000 households in 2013, and their client's refund totaled over $1.6 million! On average, the amount received through funds make up about 9% of their client's annual income. 

No experience is necessary, all training will be provided. TND is looking for individuals with a desire to help others and a willingness to learn something new. There are opportunities available at the Downtown Chelsea office, located at 4 Gerrish Ave and at the Revere Public Library, located at 179 Beach Street. Volunteer hours and days are flexible based on your interests and site operation hours. Volunteers would be needed for the tax season, late January until mid April.
