SCI Cares for the Victims from Haiti

Dorchester AmeriCorps Members and SupervisorsSCI AmeriCorps Members working at Dotwell in Dorchester have recently been caring for the victims of the disaster in Haiti.  The SCI AmeriCorps Members serving in Dorchester and their supervisors are pictured to the left.  The members, along with many other Dorchester community leaders planned a series of clinics to help victims who are now in the Boston area.  Our AmeriCorps members took responsibility for creating a resource guide and related handouts for the event from scratch, which involved calling organizations like the Haitian Multi-Service Center, Catholic Charities, Association of Haitian Women in Boston (AFAB), Haitian Adult Day Health, ABCD, and others.  Laura Santel helped with the school resource handout by gathering information about East Zone and North Zone of the BPS system. SCI's Holiday Activities

Decorated HouseHappy Holidays from SCI!  We are participating in several exciting events this holiday season.

On December 6th, we put on our 2009 Holiday House Tour, and it was a terrific success.  We had a great turnout overall. We had 141 tour-goers, and raised important funds critical to our organization’s mission. People touring the homes were able to connect with each other and the home owners, which follows SCI’s mission of connecting citizens to strengthen communities. Participants got to catch up with existing friends and neighbors, as well as, meet some new ones, while touring homes and getting ideas for creative holiday decorating. Read more

Here are Some Things We're Currently Working On!

Girls Inc. of Lynn's Part of the Solution campaign, in association with SCI's own Tosha Duester, has been involved with a project to show the Lynn community what drug paraphernalia is being sold in their stores.  Along with another Girls Inc. program, POS put together a presentation that they performed for the Lynn Board of Health in October.  They did such a great job that they were asked to give another performance in November.

One of the big events, SCI's Deborah Orlando, who has been serving with the United Neighbors of Fall River, has a part in planning is The Peace by Piece Summit. This year is the second year for the summit. The purpose of the Summit is to promote peace within the city and get people involved. This event will occur in March.
