Christmas
in the City is non-profit, all volunteer driven, organization. Once a
year we hold the Christmas in the City party for families living in
homeless shelters across the Greater Boston region. Once the families
arrive, they are greated by a welcome line of volunteers assisting them
to tables where they will be served a three-course Christmas dinner.
The children and parents are entertained with performance groups, face
painting and a special visit from Santa Claus before our Winter
Wonderland opens, with games, moonbounces and other activities. The
children are also given a gift from their Christmas list, a backpack
full of school supplies and small pieces of clothing, and with help
from Target, we are able to give out giftcards to every mother. The
Christmas in the City party is a one-day event, meant to give homeless
families a Christmas experience they may not be able to afford
otherwise.

The Christmas in the City Party will be held at the Bayside Expo Center on December 21, 2008.

Urban
Nutcracker presents a multicultural interpretation of the dance
classic, performed by professional dancers and a cast reflective of the
rich diversity & promise of Boston’s youth. Urban Nutcracker
follows the story line of the 19th century fairy tale fusing ballet,
swing, hip hop, flamenco and urban tap with the classical score of
Tchaikovsky and the pulsating beat of Ellington.

By
casting dancers from multi-ethnic backgrounds, Urban Nutcracker
provides the audience with an invaluable opportunity to bridge cultural
barriers. Designed to push beyond traditional interpretations and
therefore beyond the traditional audience reach of the holiday classic,
Urban Nutcracker will inspire a new generation of dance
enthusiasts/theater patrons!  read more »

ABCD's Fuel Assistance Program Expands Cap

SCI Dorchester - Thu, 12/18/2008 - 6:14pm

Because of increased federal and state funding to the fuel assistance, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) has broadened
eligibility for the program. It can now serve more moderate-income families than in past years. This year a family of four with an income of $53,608 is eligible for some assistance meeting their heating needs. The highest fuel assistance benefit is $1,305.

Also, due to an increased demand for fuel assistance, hours have been extended for accepting applications at the ABCD downtown office, located on 178 Tremont Street. The office will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning December 6 and continuing throughout January.

In addition, fuel assistance hours have been extended to provide access evenings and weekends at all ABCD neighborhood centers throughout Boston. Please call the ABCD Neighborhood Center
in your neighborhood for specific information.

During regular business hours you can call 617-357-6012 for more information or you can log onto www.bostonabcd.org at any time.  read more »

'Tis the Season to Bust the Myths

SCI Lynn - Wed, 12/17/2008 - 1:16pm

Underage drinking and fatal accidents dramatically increase this time of year. Educate yourself.

Myth #1: "Kids are going to drink anyway- It's a rite of passage."

REALITY: Contrary to popular belief, most kids don't drink. In Lynn, anonymous student surveys show that the majority of teens- including 61% of 10th graders and 53% of 11th graders- have not consumed alcohol during the past 30 days. Research shows that misperceptions that "everybody's doing it" actually make young people more likely to drink alcohol. On the other hand, when these misperceptions are corrected, and kids realize that "NOT everybody's doing it," they are less likely to drink alcohol.

To read more myths and find out what you can do to prevent underage drinking please click here to view the actual 'tis the season to bust the myths' document provided by Communities That Care (CTC) and Girls Inc.

Reeves School PTO Appliance/Freon Bearing/CRT Device Recycling (Postponed, Later Date TBD)

SCI Woburn - Wed, 12/17/2008 - 11:34am

Unfortunately, because of the adverse weather conditions expected this weekend, the recycling event at the Reeves school has been postponed.  Another date may be added at a later time, but for now, the next recycling event will be on January 17th at the Goodyear school, with all other information still applicable.

Getting something new under the tree this Christmas and wondering what to do with that old television, computer monitor or appliance that is broken, unwanted or unused and just taking up space?

Paul Medeiros has found and is working with a Massachusetts company that will collect these items at drop off sites set up throughout Woburn at various times throughout the year. This collection will be on Saturday, December 20, 2008 from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the Reeves School located at 240 Lexington St, in Woburn and will benefit the many Reeves School and PTO projects and programs.  Starting with this collection a portion of the proceeds will be used to set up a scholarship fund for a Woburn High School graduating senior that will be continuing their education in the field of environmental education.  read more »

Save the Peace Institute Dec. 20th/Peace Boston's 3rd Anniversary Dec 21st

Dorchester Events - Tue, 12/16/2008 - 4:40pm

SAVE

THE PEACE

  INSTITUTE!!!

Sunday, December 21st is Peace Boston's
3rd Anniversary.  Please join us in celebrating by attending the
fundraiser for the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute on Saturday.  We have
worked HARD for the past
3 years to support the efforts of the Peace Institute.  We, as a
community, cannot allow its doors to close.  They have provided support
and services to 100s of Boston's homicide victims' families for the
past 14 years.

In the true spirit of Christmas, please give the gift of peace this
holiday season.  Be sure to purchase the Peace in the Streets CD at the
event or at Funky Fresh Records, 74 Warren Street in Dudley.  Unlike a
PSP or Ipod, the low price of $10 will change someone's life.  Peace Boston just
made a donation to the Gaskin's family to help with the burial of their
son David who was killed on Monday.  Your purchase will help us to
assist other families.
